Overview

This workshop provides an opportunity for deeper understanding of both Western and Māori health models. We'll begin by exploring the history of health and wellbeing, Mātauranga Māori, and the Te Whare Tapa Whā model, then examine the definition of the four Pou. We'll review the four Pou alongside comparative concepts within health and wellbeing literature, discuss their respective hierarchy, and explore how to integrate this understanding into your clinical practice.

Learning Intentions

  • Develop your understanding of the background, formation, and traditional core concepts of Te Whare Tapa Whā model.
  • Explore how modern health and wellbeing literature relates to the core concepts of  Whare Tapa Whā.
  • Build your understanding of the hierarchical manner in which the 4 Pou of  Whare Tapa Whā relate to each other.
  • Build your understanding of the relative strengths and weaknesses of biomedical, bio-psycho-social, and Whare Tapa Whā models.
  • Reflect on how to integrate Te Whare Tapa Whā into clinical practice.
