Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Key DBT Skills for Helping Clients with Emotion Regulation

This workshop will provide an introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and some of its key components. It will give participants an understanding of DBT skills and how they may be used in their daily practice with clients.

Aim

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a treatment based on an overarching concept of emotion dysregulation as the underlying reason for a client’s struggles in life. It has a cognitive behavioural therapy basis but with the incorporation of principles of dialectics and mindfulness. It has been effective in treating a wide range of disorders across a range of population and age groups. The aim of this workshop is to introduce DBT and its key components with an emphasis on the skills that DBT teaches and is the first of two sessions.

  • Introduction to the DBT model and how this might influence your view of your clients

  • Distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills

  • Consider how you use validation with your clients

  • Mindfulness as discussed in DBT

  • Learn key skills to try with clients

MSc(Hons), BSc(Psych), PGDip. Child&Family Psych

Jess is an experienced child and family psychologist working with children, young people, and their families in community mental health settings. Currently working for Child, Adolescent and Family Community Services at Te Whatu Ora – Waitaha (formerly CDHB), she is skilled in supporting children and adolescents across a range of difficulties including helping adolescents with chronic suicidal and self-harm behaviour.

  • Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged.
