Aim
This interactive workshop introduces talk therapists to basic somatic and neurobiological principles for understanding and addressing trauma. Participants will explore how traumatic experiences impact the brain and body, learn foundational sensorimotor strategies, and practice integrating somatic awareness into traditional talk therapy practice.
Overview and Learning Intentions
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Explain the neurobiological underpinnings of trauma and its impact on brain-body communication

Identify patterns of disturbance in arousal, self-awareness and embodied presence following trauma

Implement foundation-level sensorimotor strategies within talk therapy

Identify risks and red flags, along with the rationale for referral

Ruth is an experienced Physiotherapist, Leader, Innovator, Supervisor and Educator. She has worked as a Physiotherapist in a range of different clinical areas (such as Older Persons Health, disability, musculoskeletal), with more than half her experience based in Mental Health. In her role as the Clinical Leader Physiotherapy, Specialist Mental Health Services, CDHB (2014-2020) she provided leadership in promoting awareness of neurobiological perspectives, including the integral role of physical health, trauma informed care, wellbeing, and lifestyle practices for mental health.
