Grief and Growth: How to Walk with Others through Loss

Enhance understanding of grief and loss and develop compassionate strategies to support others.

Description

Aim

Gain an understanding of grief and loss, including different types and common responses, while exploring compassionate ways to support others. Learn practical communication skills, recognise when professional help is needed, and reflect on self-care strategies when supporting those who are grieving.

Overview and Learning Intentions

  • Understand the nature of grief and loss – recognise that grief is a normal response to many forms of loss and that it varies across individuals, cultures, and life stages

  • Identify different types of grief and how each may present differently

  • Recognise signs and expressions of grief – be able to describe the emotional, physical, cognitive, and behavioural responses to grief

  • Develop supportive communication skills – practise empathetic listening, appropriate responses, and language that validates another person’s grief

  • Explore culturally responsive approaches – understand that grief is shaped by cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs, and adapt support accordingly

  • Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy grief – identify when someone may need additional professional support or referral

  • Reflect on personal beliefs and experiences of loss – build self-awareness of how their own attitudes toward grief influence the way they support others

  • Recognise the importance of boundaries and self-care – learn strategies to care for their own wellbeing when supporting someone in grief

Who is this Workshop for:

Anyone wanting to better understand and support others through grief and loss, including anyone wanting to better understand their own grief and loss. This however is not designed to be a therapy session but may well trigger an emotional response to any current or prior experiences.
