Understanding and Preventing Youth Suicide: Masterclass for Working with Youth

This comprehensive workshop aims to equip people working with youth with strategies and tools to effectively identify and address suicide risk in young people. Participants will gain a understanding of the factors contributing to youth suicide and learn evidence-based approaches to support young people in crisis.

  • Explore common myths and misconceptions
  • Gain an understanding of the complexities of suicidal ideation
  • Explore risk factors
  • Understand the role of family, peers and environment in suicide prevention
  • Learn about protective factors that can reduce suicide risk
  • Recognise warning signs
  • Gain suicide screening, risk assessment and management tools 
  • Explore prevention strategies and how to help build resilience
  • Develop strategies for early intervention and mental health promotion
  • Learn about postvention support in the aftermath of suicide

Facilitated by Dr Annette Beautrais 

PhD 

Annette is New Zealand's most experienced suicidologist, an academic who has been studying suicide research and prevention, and teaching about suicide prevention for more than 30 years. She has worked in New Zealand and internationally, has published extensively and has won international awards for her research. Currently Annette is Senior Advisor, Suicide Prevention, Te Wai Pounamu, Health NZ and Suicide Prevention Coordinator, South Canterbury. In addition, she works as an educator and consultant to a range of organisations, and runs training programmes in suicide prevention throughout the country. Annette has worked with the World Health Organisation and served on the board of the International Association for Suicide Prevention.

  • Cancellations made up to 10 working days before a workshop will incur a $39 service fee.

  • Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged. 

  • No fee applies if you are able to find a replacement participant.

  • MHERC reserves the right to cancel a workshop at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or insufficient registrations.

  • Only one person may view a webinar session per registration.
