Description
Aim
This course is designed for individuals who want to better support others with sleep issues and mental health concerns. It covers the essential science of sleep, the connection between sleep and mental health, practical strategies for identifying sleep problems, and evidence-based approaches to improving sleep. The course focuses on real-world skills and communication tips suited to those without clinical training, enabling participants to confidently and compassionately engage with people experiencing sleep difficulties.

Understand the basics of sleep theory and the vital functions of healthy sleep.

Recognise common sleep problems and how poor sleep affects mental health.

Learn how lifestyle and physiological factors influence sleep and mental well-being.

Discover practical approaches to regulate arousal, improve sleep drive, and support circadian rhythms—all explained in a way that makes sense for non-clinical helpers.

Explore body-based and behavioural techniques that anyone can use, and practice ways to talk about sleep concerns supportively.

Appreciate the boundaries of a non-clinical role, including knowing when and how to encourage seeking professional help.

Facilitated by Ruth Troughton

Ruth is an experienced Physiotherapist, Leader, Innovator, Supervisor and Educator. She has worked as a Physiotherapist in a range of different clinical areas (such as Older Persons Health, disability, musculoskeletal), with more than half her experience based in Mental Health. In her role as the Clinical Leader Physiotherapy, Specialist Mental Health Services, CDHB (2014-2020) she provided leadership in promoting awareness of neurobiological perspectives, including the integral role of physical health, trauma informed care, wellbeing, and lifestyle practices for mental health.

Cancellations made up to 10 working days before a workshop will incur a $39 service fee.

Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged.
