Aim

This workshop will provide an overview of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Develop your awareness and understanding of people who display signs and symptoms of FASD, how it is diagnosed and how to adapt support to the different needs of those living with FASD.

Overview and Learning Intentions

  • What is FASD and how can it be recognised?
  • Shifting thinking to the FASD paradigm which is different to working with other client groups
  • Learn how the brain is affected and how that impacts on behaviour and mental wellbeing
  • Explore how to communicate effectively with individuals with FASD
  • Gain an understanding of what are realistic expectations when working with individuals with FASD
  • Consider ways to reduce stigma for birth mothers and individuals with FASD

Facilitated by Dr Valerie McGinn

PhD

Valerie is a Clinical Neuropsychologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of FASD. She works in a multidisciplinary team in private practice in Auckland, as well as developing services and support for people with FASD and their families. A provider of FASD evidence to NZ Courts so that the effects of the neurodisability can be understood and taken into consideration, she also advises on the care and management of children and young people with FASD in Oranga Tamariki care and in the Criminal Justice system. Dr McGinn is a founding and current board member of FASD-CAN (Care Action Network).

  • Cancellations made up to 10 working days before a workshop will incur a $39 service fee.

  • Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged. 

  • No fee applies if you are able to find a replacement participant.

  • MHERC reserves the right to cancel a workshop at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or insufficient registrations.

  • Only one person may view a webinar session per registration.
