Aim
Enhance your ability to support people with autism effectively by deepening your understanding of their experiences. Explore characteristics that individuals with autism may experience and the challenges that these often present, particularly anxiety. When their anxiety reaches overwhelming levels, people with autism may become highly distressed or behave in extreme ways. This workshop aims to equip you with the tools to identify triggers and provide proactive support.
Overview and Learning Intentions
- Explore characteristics experienced by individuals with autism, including sensory processing challenges, communication difficulties, and challenges with social relationships and problem-solving.
- Learn about the unique thought processes of individuals with autism.
- Understand the different challenges that anxiety presents for people who are autistic.
- Explore different triggers which may lead to overwhelm, distress or extreme behaviours
- Gain knowledge and tools to better understand and minimise distress.
- Examine a framework for proactive interventions.

ONZM, FNZPsS, PhD, DipClinPsych, DipHSM(dist)
Olive has over 40 years' experience working as a clinical psychologist in the area of Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder and related areas. She has published widely in these specialist fields, focusing on sexual education, challenging and offending behaviour by people who have intellectual disabilities, adults and children with high and complex needs, and various aspects of the healthcare of people who have intellectual disabilities. Olive was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit in 2008 for Services to Intellectual Disability.

Cancellations made up to 10 working days before a workshop will incur a $39 service fee.

Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged.
