Overview

The transition to and through motherhood brings significant psychological and emotional shifts that are often overlooked. During this workshop we’ll deepen our understanding of Matrescence and maternal mental health and explore the unique challenges this period presents. We'll examine research on perinatal distress and the factors that influence wellbeing during this time, and build practical strategies to enhance perinatal wellbeing and strengthen our ability to support mothers and parents navigating this profound life transition.

Learning Intentions

  • Gain an understanding of Matrescence.

  • Learn about the key challenges mothers face that can impact maternal wellbeing.

  • Learn strategies and tools to enhance maternal mental wellbeing.

  • Discuss the difference between ‘normal’ challenges and when clinical support may be required.

  • Review options for where to refer mothers for support and professional help.

Who Should Attend?

Everyone who works with or supports mothers and parents during the perinatal period, including midwives, nurses, health practitioners, social workers, counsellors, educators, and whānau or community support workers.
