Maternal Mental Health Training for Peer Support Workers
Description
Aim
To deepen your understanding of maternal mental health, matrescence and perinatal distress to enhance your ability to support mothers and parents. You will gain some knowledge around the research on perinatal distress and maternal wellbeing, risk and protective factors, screening tools, as well as strategies to support you in your work.
Learning Outcomes:

An overview and introduction to the concept of matrescence

Identify signs of perinatal distress

Develop confidence in screening for perinatal distress & suicide

Understand the difference between ‘normal’ challenges and when clinical support may be required

Know where to refer mothers for support and professional help

Develop an awareness of the holistic well-being needs of mothers

Develop skills in normalising and validating the challenges of motherhood

Learn strategies to enhance maternal mental well-being

Erin is the operations manager of Perinatal Wellbeing Canterbury. Erin has worked in the health sector for many years. Erin uses her lived experience with mental illness to help support mothers and to advocate for better perinatal mental health support. Erin is involved with the perinatal network across New Zealand and is Vice-Chair of the Women’s Health Advisory Committee at Te Whatu Ora Canterbury.

Christina has been working in the mental health sector for over a decade. Christina works in private practice as a psychologist specalising in perinatal mental health and adolescents. Christina also co-founded Matrescence NZ, a social enterprise, striving to reduce perinatal distress and enhance mothers and infant health outcomes.
