Overview

This workshop presents key information on Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) use and enables you to consider and develop an appropriate response to AOD issues in your setting. It is designed for nonspecialists, those who are new to the area of AOD and brief intervention, or those wanting a refresher. We’ll explore effective models and strategies that you can confidently weave into your practice, and learn and practise new skills via role-play and demonstrations. 

Learning Intentions

  • Explore contributors to problematic AOD use and review types and groups of substances, standard drinks, and low-risk guidelines.

  • Gain an understanding of stages, cycles, and motivations for change.

  • Learn how to initiate a conversation around AOD use, explore appropriate interventions for different situations, and practise carrying out an AOD brief intervention.

  • Gain tips and strategies to reduce or stop use, review safety factors, and learn how to access appropriate help.

  • Reflect on how to further develop your AOD brief intervention skills and knowledge.

Who Should Attend?

Everyone who supports others with their health and wellbeing including care and support workers in the health and social care sectors, health and allied health practitioners, and those new to the area of alcohol and other drug issues and brief intervention.
