This interactive workshop will help participants develop cultural competency in their practice. Define culture, differentiate between observations, judgments, and evaluations, and be aware of your own cultural values. Learn the differences between refugee and migrant people’s experiences.

Aim

This interactive workshop will explore refugee and migrant experiences, principals of working with interpreters, cultural framework and values. Through this, participants will develop and enhance culturally competent practice.

Overview and Learning Intentions

  • Define culture and be aware of your own cultural values

  • The differences between refugee and migrant people’s experiences

  • Understand how cultural framework impacts on practice

  • The principles of working with interpreters

  • Discover an explanatory model of the components of culture

Facilitated by Denise Huisman

Denise currently works with Christchurch Resettlement Services (CRS) with valuable experience working with migrant background people. A registered Social Worker for 13 years with CRS, she has recently taken up the role of their Health Promotion Team Leader. Her focus is on education and programmes which encourage the recovery and maintenance of their client’s wellbeing.

  • Cancellations made up to 10 working days before a workshop will incur a $39 service fee.

  • Cancellations (or non-attendance) made 10 working days or less will not be refunded and the full workshop fee will be charged. 

  • No fee applies if you are able to find a replacement participant.

  • MHERC reserves the right to cancel a workshop at any time due to unforeseen circumstances or insufficient registrations.

  • Only one person may view a webinar session per registration.
