Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder: A Consumer Perspective

To greater understand the dynamics of working with someone who has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Often mental health professionals either refuse to work with people with BPD or limit their input of clinical care, to the detriment of the person with the disorder. Additionally family and friends find it difficult to relate to the person’s needs, leaving a person who is terrified of abandonment, being effectively abandoned.

• An introduction to the diagnosis of BPD, using the DSMV, academic literature and personal experiences
• Co-morbidity and prognosis
• Focus on treatment from a consumer perspective
• Discrimination
• Strategies for decreasing the negative impact of BPD from the academic literature and from a consumer perspective
• Presentation of a positive personal journey

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Challenge any misconceptions or discrimination
• Extend their academic knowledge of BPD
• Understand a consumer perspective on BPD
• Share experiences of what worked well and what could be improved when working with people with BPD
• Discuss within the group positive strategies for working with people with BPD
• Hear a story with a happy ending
