Aim
People with Aspergers or Other High Functioning Autism Disorders have difficulty in communicating with others and interpreting what people mean, which can seriously impact upon assessment, evaluation and treatment within the mental health service. In addition people with Aspergers react differently to medications and can be difficult to assess as their ability to self report varies considerably. This course will give you the tools to work more effectively and understand which medications can be used, why, and how.

Overview
• Introduce Aspergers and Other High Functioning Autism Disorders and the core aspects that  make up these pervasive disorders
• Discuss how these aspects affect assessment, evaluation and treatment including medication
• Explore communication styles and useful key phrases to ensure effective communication
• How to manage behaviours without exacerbating sensory sensitivities

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Identify the key impairments of Aspergers and High Functioning Autism Disorders
• How people with Aspergers and Autism interact with others and their environment
• How to communicate with these people in calm and stressful situations
• Understand medication use, issues, psychiatric evaluation techniques and issues
