There is increasing awareness that people with an intellectual disability are at greater risk of developing mental illness. They are often not able to clearly articulate their internal experiences and feelings, and because of this are often misdiagnosed or seen to be complex and challenging. This workshop is for those working in a setting where they support people with intellectual disability.

• What is intellectual disability?
• Common mental health issues
• Factors that contribute to mental health issues
• Typical and atypical signs of mental illness
• Strategies to support a person who has an intellectual disability and mental health issues

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Understand the presence and impact of intellectual disability on an individual
• Identify the reasons why a person with an intellectual disability might be likely to have a mental health issue and the difficulties in discovering what that problem might be
• Recognise when a person with an intellectual disability might have a mental illness and support the person to accept help
• Know how to identify behavioural difficulties in a person with an intellectual disability that could be related to a mental health issue
