Aim
All corners of the healthcare sector need to adjust to the rapidly growing proportion of older people in our community, driven by the ageing of New Zealand’s population. This seminar will provide an introduction and overview of the mental health problems that older people experience most commonly, for the benefit of healthcare workers in all fields.

Overview
• What are the common mental health problems faced by older people as a group
• How common are these problems
• The main differences between younger and older people with these problems
• The main management options overall

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Define the main psychiatric problems faced by older people and how common they are
• Understand the key approaches available for informal carers, doctors, nurses and allied 
   health professionals to help older people with psychiatric problems
• Describe how older peoples’ psychiatric problems are similar to, and different from, those of 
   younger adults
