Aim
There are several pieces of legislation in Aotearoa/New Zealand that impact on people accessing mental health services and influencing the care and treatment provided by these services. Much of this legislation protects the rights of those accessing the services while some of it gives power to the state to remove certain rights in particular circumstances. This workshop will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to ensure you are managing your role within the boundaries of this legislation in order to protect the rights of those individuals affected.

• The Mental Health Act 1992
• Intellectual Disability Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation Act 2003
• Privacy and health information
• Discrimination and human rights
• Protection of personal and property rights 

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Gain a basic understanding of each piece of legislation in relation to its application in their work
• Gain the knowledge to ensure you are managing your role within the boundaries of this legislation
