Course Type: Introductory | Course Level: Four

Aim
This interactive workshop will consider the impact suicide bereavement can have on the lives of children, young people, adults, families/whānau and communities, and why. It will look briefly at the nature of suicide itself and what is known about the factors that help to prevent it, including factors to help prevent ‘copycat’ suicide situations. It will look at what suicide loss, grief and trauma involve and common reactions different age groups have to them. Differing cultural perspectives and a range of practical, effective strategies and tools for supporting different ages through suicide bereavement.

• How they can impact different age groups
• Practical and effective strategies, and helpful resources, supporting different age groups
• Time to discuss supporting people through any specific life situations, at participants’ request

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Better understand the nature and impact of change, loss, trauma and grief
• Learn effective ways to support different age groups through tough times
• Learn how to respond when people situations get especially complicated
• Gain knowledge of what resources are available to assist them
