Future Course | Alcohol & Other Drug Overview: Brief Intervention for Mild Alcohol Problems


Course Type: Intermediate | Course Level: Six | Catering: Refreshments and light lunch provided

The first part of this workshop will provide participants with an overview of different types of substances of misuse, their effect, how to assess for intoxication, withdrawal and brief introduction into assessment of these. The second component will be a skills-based workshop in learning to provide a five-to-seven minute brief intervention for those with mild alcohol problems that can be utilised in any work setting. 

• Introduction to different substances, their affects and assessing signs of intoxication and withdrawal
• Understanding the difference between abuse and dependence
• Introduction to appropriate assessment of alcohol and other drugs usage
• To be aware of safe drinking guidelines
• Practice providing a five-to-seven minute brief intervention for mild alcohol problems

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided the opportunity to:
• Practice conducting a five-to-seven minute brief intervention for mild alcohol problems
• Practice brief assessment skills for assessing alcohol and other drug use
• Gain an understanding of the benefits of providing brief interventions
• Develop an understanding of substances of misuse and complications associated with their use
