Future Courses | Working with Māori: Improving Outcomes for Tangata Whaiora & their Whānau (Part One)


Course Type: Introductory | Course Level: Four | Catering: Refreshments and light lunch provided

To develop and enhance culturally competent practice with Maori using practical concepts and ideas.

• Brief review of The Treaty of Waitangi, texts, and the impact of historical legislation which has breached the Treaty
• Current issues relevant to the mental health of Māori today, including economic status, educational attainment, employment status, health status, and ownership and Te Reo Māori issues
• Working from a model of health and wellbeing which incorporates holistic principles of support and providing services for Māori communities that are culturally appropriate, proactive and effective
• Policy and procedure. What is currently in place and what could we put in place?
• Practical things we can do, no matter where our organisation sits

Note: Part Two of this course will be held on Wednesday, 18 May 2016, 9.00am – 2.00pm and will cover Mason Durie’sTe Pae Mahutonga and Te Whare Tapa Whā (Maori Health Models). This will be available to register online mid-March. 

You will need to have attended Part One before attending Part Two.

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Learn briefly about the Treaty of Waitangi and how it relates to their work
• Be able to define a culturally appropriate framework they can utilise in everyday practice
• Identify policy and procedure that they can develop/review
• Identify practical opportunities to improve their service delivery to Māori
