Understanding and Dealing with Anxiety

This course will provide a general introduction about the experience and effects of anxiety. Particular focus will be given to Agoraphobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder and Social Phobia. Participants will develop an awareness of the factors influencing paths to recovery from an anxiety disorder, including an overview of anxiety management techniques.

• Introduction to anxiety disorders and diagnosis criteria for anxiety disorders
• Anxiety and the anxiety cycle including risk factor and causes
• Management options and community support
• Supporting a person with an anxiety disorder

Learning Intentions
Participants will be provided with the opportunity to:
• Develop an awareness of groups of anxiety disorders and the key features of each disorder
• Gain knowledge of Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Social Phobia & Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
• Discuss management and support available in Christchurch for people with anxiety disorders
